Sadaik, a Burmese Laquerware Manuscript , Kammavaca, Chest & Stand
19" High x 27" Wide x 10" Deep Please refer to the Lacquerware description on the previous page. Sadaik is a sacred scroll box used in monasteries to hold palm-leaf manuscripts shaped in long oblong folios that tell the teachings of Buddha, 16 sheets to a set. The manuscript delineates Buddhist monk rituals and rules of conduct as described in the Tipitaka, the Theravada Buddhist canon. It is beautifully carved with Thai Angels on all four sides. The manuscripts would be held in a separate box that sits on top to protect them from harm by mice or water. This piece is embellished with gold leaf, molded thayo decoration inlaid with glass. A stunning piece in great condition. A rare find.
