The large bamboo rat is a species of rodent in the family Spalacidae found in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is one of four species of bamboo rat. Individuals can reach lengths 20 inches wth an 8 inch  tail, and weigh up to 9 pounds.

Their typical diet includes bamboo roots, but they also feed on cultivated tapioca and sugarcane. They are, in turn, hunted as food by human beings.

Here the bamboo rat is thought to represent the personality traits:

quick-witted, resourceful, versatile, kind according to the Chinese zodiac.
