Hmak, Betel Nut, is Burmese Lacquerware
7.5" High x 8.75" Diameter Please refer to the Burmese Lacquerware description on the last page. Hmak is a betel nut box or Kun-It, with an inner tray although there may have been two trays at one time. The trays hold condiments like chopped areca nuts, dried orange peel, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, cardamon & licorice. Another tray would have dried tobacco leaves. And the bottom compartment will be filled with heart-shaped betel vine leaves. The top slides over the base snugly for freshness. It is decorated with yun work. This is a traditional item of hospitality. Chewing betel nut has a refreshing, slightly stimulating effect. There is minor wear and tear to be seen from age. Probably 19th century.
