Tribal Textiles & Artisan Traditions

Over my 40-year importing career, I have been fortunate to spend months at a time traveling, meeting artisans, and getting to know the people behind their remarkable creations.

From the beginning, my intention was to work directly with the artisans rather than buy from middlemen. I wanted to understand their lifestyles, traditions, and craftsmanship—not simply as a tourist, but as a respected friend.

Travel often involved long periods of waiting, whether at airports or while arranging transportation. I filled those hours creating my own embroidery designs, stitching them onto clothing. Little did I know that this pastime would lead to some of my most treasured experiences.

Early in my career, while visiting a small village in northern Thailand, I took out my embroidery hoop and became completely absorbed in my work. Before long, I found myself surrounded by a group of hill tribe women, fascinated by what I was creating.

Although we didn't share a common spoken language, we shared something wonderful: the universal language of stitches. We laughed, exchanged ideas, and connected through our love of embroidery.

These women were not accustomed to meeting foreigners. At first, they were curious but cautious. By sharing my craft, I was able to break through those barriers and begin friendships that would grow throughout my years of travel.

It is a joy to share these extraordinary textiles with you. Each piece reflects the creativity, traditions, and remarkable skills of the artisans who made it.
